This is leading to a lot of users who don't understand what enabling TRIM in Yosemite entails to all of a sudden be stuck and not be able to get into their system, leading to forum posts directing them to the proper fix. This can also happen randomly if your system crashes and performs a PRAM reset by itself.

The other big issue is that, if you either reset the PRAM or install a system update that does it, your machine will flip kext singing back on automatically, and then will refuse to boot since the hacked kext that enables TRIM is not signed. With the increased amount of interest in exploits the last few years, especially on the Apple side, you don't want to have to worry about that. For one, it leaves your system open to rogue kexts and greatly reduces the security. This leads to a number of different problems, though. OWC just wants to sell their products, and hopes that most people who buy from them don't actually notice the diminished speeds you run into by not having TRIM enabled.īottom line, you can still enable TRIM in Yosemite by disabling kext signing.

Garbage Collection and TRIM are not the same thing at all, but it has created this myth in the Mac community that TRIM is no longer needed for newer SSDs. I think that started when OWC claimed all of their SSDs don't need it, and tried to confuse consumers by saying they have automatic "garbage collection". TRIM is still really important, regardless of what some people say.
